Spitfire Design Co. is looking for a Controller to join our team of rockstars.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Accounting, Finance or related discipline
- Accounting designation (CMA, CGA or CA), or an equivalent combination of related experience and education
- Minimum 10 years accounting experience in a senior accounting or financial management role with at least 5 years experience in human resources
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills

Primary Responsibilities
1. Financial Reporting and Analysis
Prepare accurate and timely financial statements, including balance sheets, income statements, and cash flow statements. Analyze financial data and provide management with insights and reports to aid in decision-making.
2. Budgeting and Forecasting
Help create budgets and financial forecasts. Track actual performance against the budget and provide analysis to explain variances, helping management understand how well the company is performing financially and make adjustments as needed.
3. Internal Controls and Compliance
Ensure that the company has proper internal controls in place to safeguard assets, prevent fraud, and ensure the accuracy of financial reporting. Work to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and accounting principles.
4. General Ledger and Accounting Operations
Manage the company’s accounting department, including overseeing day-to-day accounting operations such as accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and the general ledger. Ensure all financial transactions are accurately recorded and reported.
5. Cash Flow Management
Monitor cash flow, ensuring that there is enough liquidity to meet financial obligations. Could also include managing the company’s investments.
6. Audit Management
Coordinate both internal and external audits of the company’s financial statements and records. Prepare all necessary documentation and work with auditors to ensure the company meets auditing requirements and standards.
7. Tax Planning and Compliance
Ensure that the company complies with tax regulations at all levels. May also include tax planning to optimize tax liabilities and make sure filings are accurate and timely.
8. Supervising Accounting Staff
Supervise the accounting team, including bookkeepers, accountants, and payroll staff. Provide guidance, training, and oversight to ensure that accounting procedures are followed and the team is operating efficiently.
9. Cost Control and Expense Management
Monitor and analyze the company’s expenses to find ways to reduce costs and improve profitability. Implement cost control measures and regularly review spending to ensure the company is operating within its budget.
10. Financial Strategy Support
While the CFO or executive management sets the overall financial strategy, the controller will play a key role in supporting this strategy by ensuring that the financial data and analysis are accurate. Could also include evaluating the financial impact of business decisions, such as capital investments or mergers and acquisitions.
11. System Implementation and Process Improvement
Oversee or participate in the implementation of financial systems (such as accounting software or Project Management systems) and look for ways to improve processes to increase efficiency and accuracy in the financial operations of the business.
12. Other responsibilities include
- Communicate financial metrics to senior management
- Provide leadership and support to accounts receivable and accounts payable departments
- Manage the preparation of payroll for personnel
- Keep up-to-date on current HR trends
- General bookkeeping, incl.: Account receivable / Accounts payable, Payroll (via ADP), Reconciliations, Liaison with Accountant / CRA, Assist in the preparation of regularly scheduled accounting reports
- Prepare and send project invoices.
