Responsibilities

The Accounting Assistant (Accounts Receivable & Central Cashier) provides accounting functions for the Corporate Accounts Receivable Office and the Central Cashier within Financial Services. The position supports the goals of the unit through being responsible for ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the Corporate Accounts Receivable sub-ledger, maintenance of the customer database, the sub-ledger reconciliation to the general ledger, account analysis, account reconciliations, and data compilation and reporting on any matters related to Accounts Receivable. The Accounting Assistant is the main point of contact for external customers of Western and campus billing units for issues related to invoicing and payment. The role provides guidance and support to the Western community to ensure compliance with relevant policies and procedures. The Accounting Assistant provides cheque and cash processing for the campus to ensure funds are deposited on a timely basis with the bank and provides cash reimbursements for petty cash transactions.

Qualifications

Education:

2 year community college diploma in business accounting or financial administration

Experience:

3 years’ experience in a financial administration, accounts receivable or accounting role
Experience performing financial transactions using an electronic financial system
Experience with collections, handling cash and cheques for bank deposits is preferred

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Knowledge of general office procedures
Detail oriented with an ability to process information with high levels of accuracy
Communication skills to clearly express ideas in an objective manner and adapt communication style to suit the situation and the audience
Customer service skills with a desire to achieve results in a timely manner
Demonstrated ability to work independently, take initiative and follow through on work assignments
Proven ability and natural inclination to interact with people in professional, respectful and diplomatic manner
Ability to provide guidance and support to ensure compliance with processes in a way that is positively received
Results-oriented with an ability to handle many tasks and maintain a high level of performance
Ability to understand and effectively communicate internal and external policies, guidelines and practices to stakeholders
Intermediate computer skills with Microsoft Office, including spreadsheet maintenance, word processing and database management
Ability to work independently and effectively as a member of the team to achieve departmental results
Familiar with applications used by Western preferred – e-mail, calendars, OWL, Cascade, PeopleSoft, Mustang Market
