Position Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join our team. The ideal candidate will have experience working in accounting firms, particularly assist in managing the financial records, ensuring the accuracy of general ledger accounts, preparing financial reports, and supporting various accounting processes. This role involves working with the accounting team, including year-end tasks such as preparing compilation reports and corporate tax returns. Experience working in an accounting firm is highly preferred, as the position requires a strong understanding of professional accounting practices.
Key Responsibilities:
General Ledger Maintenance:
- Record journal entries and ensure accurate coding and posting of transactions.
- Perform regular reconciliations of general ledger accounts, bank accounts, and other subsidiary ledgers.
Month-End and Year-End Close Process:
- Assist in the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing procedures, including accruals, prepaid expenses, and other adjustments.
- Prepare and maintain supporting schedules and reconciliations for financial statement preparation.
- Assist with year-end tasks, including preparation of compilation reports and corporate tax returns.
Accounts Payable & Accounts Receivable:
- Support AP/AR processes by verifying invoices, ensuring timely payments, and applying incoming payments correctly.
- Assist with the review and reconciliation of vendor and customer accounts.
Financial Reporting:
- Assist in the preparation of internal and external financial statements and reports.
- Support in analyzing financial data, identifying trends, and variances from budget/forecast.
Compliance & Auditing:
- Assist with the preparation of schedules and supporting documentation for audits and tax returns.
- Ensure compliance with internal financial controls, policies, and procedures.
- Work with external auditors as needed during year-end processes.
Support Payroll & Tax Filings:
- Assist in the processing of payroll and preparation of payroll tax returns, as needed.
- Help ensure accurate and timely filing of required government reports, such as GST/HST, provincial taxes, and other relevant filings.
Special Projects:
- Participate in ad-hoc projects such as system implementations, process improvements, and policy updates as directed by management.
Qualifications:
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field.
- Experience: Minimum 2-3 years of relevant accounting experience, preferably within an accounting firm environment.
Skills:
- Strong understanding of accounting principles (GAAP/IFRS).
- Experience with year-end processes, including preparing compilation reports and corporate tax returns.
- Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, Xero) and MS Office Suite, especially Excel.
- Excellent attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment.
- Adaptable with changing technolgy and learn multiple systems.
Preferred Qualifications:
- CPA designation (or working towards) is an asset.
- Experience with audit support and tax filings, especially corporate tax returns and year-end reporting.
Working Conditions:
- This is a full-time (in-person) position, requiring approximately 40 hours per week.
