Our team is growing once again! Seeking a 0.8FTE Accounting Manager (CPA, 30 hours/wk equivalent).
Accepting applications until Oct 26, 2024, target start date Nov 18, 2024. Role is not open to candidates located outside of Canada.
Quick-(ish) Overview:
Boost CPA is looking for an Accounting Manager (100% remote, 0.8 FTE), as we equip ourselves for the next stage of our business journey. Working closely with each client’s assigned bookkeeper and the client themselves, this role will focus on meeting regular ongoing accounting needs typical of an industry Accounting Manager role. We are a high-contact remote firm, so relationships are very important both internally and externally. We are building a Canadian-based team of bookkeepers and CPAs that value working with efficiency-boosting tools, with clients that want to get more out of their accounting, and that want to work somewhere with meaningful work life balance. We're searching for the CPAs that want to earn a good salary & bonus for their efforts, but that also value their free time with their family and friends and have passions outside of work as well. Well-balanced people make for great accountants in our opinion (get it…balanced?). If this sounds appealing, read on!
The company
We are Boost CPA - a young & growing online CPA firm specializing in outsourced accounting department services for small- to mid-size organizations ($1 – 15M annual revenue). We are a relationship-heavy firm, and we integrate with our client teams to provide professional bookkeeping, Accounting Manager, Controller, and CFO services to organizations that would otherwise not have the benefit of a full accounting team on their roster. Our team is growing once more, and we are seeking another Accounting Manager to grow with us!
You will work in a firm focused on helping organizations improve their processes, take accounting stress off their minds, and gain valuable insights into their financial performance. All of this enables our clients to make more informed business decisions, and it is all possible because of you and the team's accurate & timely work. We are a technology heavy firm, deploying a wide variety of software solutions for our clients and becoming experts in their own existing systems, so a penchant for on-the-job learning and an innate sense of curiosity are a must!
We focus on accepting the right clients, with the right fit for our services, and with the right client mindset to align with our values. We aren’t just accepting any old client (no shoeboxes of receipts here), and we are constantly refining our vision for the types of clients we will accept and that we are actively pursuing going forward. We aren’t focussing solely on one niche of client industry, but rather, our niche is working with clients genuinely interested in improving their accounting function, getting better insights from it, and making better-informed decisions. The client portfolio for this position will include a brewery & lounge, custom home builder, action sports media and manufacturing, forestry, not for profits, and more. So, you won’t get bored only working on one specific type of client!
We started in 2022 building our vision of an accounting firm with an emphasis on the LIFE portion of “work-life balance”, and we want to find the professional, reliable, and relatable CPAs out there that are seeking the same. We offer agency to our employees, in that new work doesn’t constantly land on your desk with an impossible deadline and no consultation. We are a team of 10, and you will work with each client’s assigned bookkeeper, our Controller, and our founder, coordinating on tax compliance work, system improvements, financial and management reporting, etc.
We are based on beautiful Vancouver Island and have clients around BC. Because of time zone considerations for our clients, we hope to hire from BC or western provinces/territories but are open to candidates from around this wonderful country of ours, if you are prepared to work based on the BC time zone. This role will involve plenty of client and third-party contact, so working during BC time is essential for the position.
The Role
This role will focus on typical day-to-day duties of an Accounting Manager in Industry, only in a fractional way for our clients. This means, focussing on the following core accounting tasks:
- Oversee the bookkeeping team, being their first point of contact for questions regarding treatment of items in their workflows, resolving issues/bottlenecks in their workflows, etc.
- Prepare and/or oversee Sales and AR function, ensuring accurate outgoing client invoices, incoming AR payments, and AR account reconciliations. Main point of contact for client-customers, for investigating invoice/AR inquiries. Main point of initiation for Plooto AR payment requests for clients that use this system.
- Oversee and assist with AP account reconciliation for client-vendors with credit terms, assisting bookkeeper in this process, reviewing AP with clients at regular intervals, and main point of initiation for Plooto AP payments for vendors
- Oversee and assist as needed with Payroll setups, allocations, and review of pay batches
- Perform monthly bank & CC reconciliations, investigating and resolving any unusual items found in these.
- Oversee project expense/revenue allocations, perform adjusting entries related to this task (eg payroll costs allocated across various projects), monthly journal entries for prepaids & accruals where necessary, etc.
- Prepare monthly closes, working with Controller through their reviews for compliance and reporting work, preparing reports, investigating items, etc.
This position would suit someone with previous experience in a similar role, and who has a proven ability to use cloud-based software efficiently. With our clients, we mainly use Quickbooks Online, Dext, Plooto, Slack, Float Financial, Xero, Microsoft business suite, and Toggl for our time, but you may also find yourself using a variety of other platforms as well. Experience in these ones, or with other integrations and optimizations into QBO is an asset, but a willingness to learn and natural curiosity are a must! Skills can be taught, curiosity cannot!

Who YOU are
We are looking for someone who is diligent, accountable, and able to manage their own workload, but is also relatable, loves life outside of work, and has passions that drive them. Clients hire us for our knowledge, but they retain us because of the connection and relationships we build with them, and these traits help immensely with that. - Is a CPA with experience in a similar role in industry AND has experience balancing workloads in a multi-client environment such as a senior associate or Manager in traditional public practice.
- Is organized, diligent, and professional in the face of challenges – but also not afraid to ask for help when needed.
- Is open to flexible working and managing their own time and client expectations.
- Is excited about the opportunity to work with and learn about clients in a variety of industries – craft breweries, custom homes, media production, sports manufacturing, not-for-profits, etc.
