Reporting to the Senior Manager, Total Rewards, the Benefits Specialist supports the design, implementation, and coordination of the benefits programs ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compensation philosophy; competitiveness within the industry and community; and compliance with collective agreements and relevant legislation. The Benefits Specialist will provide consultative analytical services for the organization’s benefit and pension programs and provide subject matter expertise and guidance to groups within HR and consults across the company regarding benefit and pension issues.

About The Role
- Provides specialized guidance to the HR team and management on the application of benefit and pension plans on issues related to recruitment, development, and retention of employees.
- Interprets and applies HR and benefit carrier policies, collective agreements and legislation consulting with others in HR, Payroll and WWS.
- Provides subject matter expertise on all benefit and pension plan provisions and provides guidance to the HR team.
- Respond to second level escalations, review data and ensure knowledge articles are comprehensive and aid in driving down the number of escalations
- Ensures employees are well-informed regarding benefits and pension programs by ensuring knowledge articles are comprehensive in supporting the business
- In collaboration with the Sr Total Rewards Specialist, ensure the regular communication of the EVP to both internal and external audiences
- Lead the implementation of benefit changes including those flowing from collective agreement and other union settlements.
- Lead the year end benefit processes projects (reconciliations, balance reviews, long-term income protection pension contribution payments, age-related benefit coverage terminations, dependent eligibility, coverage terminations, health care spending account balances, paid time off carried-forward balances and pay-outs, etc.)
- Research and report on economic indicators, market data and trends to support external competitiveness.
- Lead the updating and revamping of programs to ensure best practices are embedded, processes are efficient, and policies are aligned to the programs
- Conduct a bi-annual external review of the insured and uninsured benefit programs to create an understanding of the market position of the LCBO packages.
About You
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Human Resources or related field.
- 5+ years of recent benefit and pension experience.
- Experience assisting in the implementation of several benefits programs.
- Experience understanding benefits related data, renewals, and partnering with vendors and benefit providers.
- Experience with project management.
- Sound knowledge of HR and benefits procedures and union contracts.
- Knowledge of employee benefits best practices in both union and non-union environments.
- Sound understanding of applicable legislation, concepts, collective agreements, typical company policies and benefits provisions.
