We are seeking a Director of Finance.
Candidates must reliably commute to our Creemore, ON office two days per week, with the remaining three days being a work-from-home arrangement.
Start Date: September 2024
Work from Home / Remote: Hybrid
Wage: $103,700 - $127,000. There is some flexibility based on the level of experience

The Director of Finance will be a strategic thought-partner. The successful candidate will join and lead three existing members of our financial / Human Resources team and be a hands-on, productive manager who will lead and continue to develop our internal team to support the following areas: Finance, Business Planning, Budgeting, Human Resources, Administration, and Information Technology. The successful candidate will have experience in financial management for a complex non-profit with multiple funding sources and diverse programs delivered nationally.
The Director of Finance will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision making and operations as Water First continues to enhance its quality programming and build capacity. This is a tremendous opportunity for a finance leader to maximize and strengthen the internal capacity of a well-respected, high-impact organization.
Responsibilities for this position include:
Financial Management
- Analyze and present financial reports in an accurate and timely manner; clearly communicate monthly and annual financial results; collate financial reporting materials for various funders, and oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting
- Coordinate and lead the annual audit process, liaise with external auditors and the finance committee of the board of directors; assess any necessary changes
- Oversee and lead annual budgeting and planning process in conjunction with the ED; administer and review all financial plans and budgets; monitor progress and changes and keep senior leadership team abreast of the organization’s financial status
- Manage organizational cash flow and forecasting
- Oversee the accounting department to ensure appropriate accounting systems and internal controls are in place and supervise Water First’s finance & Human Resources staff
- Implement a robust contracts management and financial management/reporting system
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall policy and procedure manual
- Effectively prepare communications and information reflecting critical financial matters for the board of directors. Engage with leadership to develop short, medium, and long-term financial plans
- Remain up to date on non-profit audit best practices and provincial and federal law regarding charitable organizations. Ensure proper filing of required tax returns
Human Resources, Information Technology and Administration
- Collaborate with and support Water First’s human resources team, participating in the development of enhanced professional development, compensation and benefits, performance evaluation, training, and recruiting
- Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team
- Work closely and transparently with all external partners including third-party vendors and consultants
- Coordinate with the leadership team with respect to administrative functions, facilities and information technology to ensure efficient and consistent operations as the organization scales
The ideal candidate for this position will possess the following:
- Minimum of a bachelor’s degree, ideally with an MBA or related degree
- CPA designation is a must have
- At least 7-10 years of overall professional experience; ideally 6+ years of broad financial and operations management experience
- Considerable experience in non-profit accounting, including fund and grant accounting, compliance, and reporting for a charitable organization
- The ideal candidate has experience of final responsibility for the quality and content of all financial data, reporting and audit coordination for either a division or significant program area
- Ability to translate financial concepts to – and to effectively collaborate with – program leaders and fundraising colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
- Technologically savvy with experience selecting and overseeing related accounting software installations and managing relationships with software vendors; knowledge of accounting and reporting software
- Advanced QuickBooks desktop experience is a must have
- Advanced MS Office and Google Suite experience
- Commitment to training and mentorship programs that maximize individual and organization goals
