About The Role
Nelson Education is seeking an Accountant I to join our team. The successful incumbent in this role will report to the Director, Accounting and Reporting. This role requires a strong understanding of month-end close processes along with expertise in accounting entries and advanced Excel skills. The Accountant I will play a crucial role in the month-end close and will be involved with upcoming projects such as process re-engineering and documentation. We are looking for a candidate who is eager to learn, willing to dive into various tasks, and demonstrates initiative and enthusiasm for their work. The role offers a range of opportunities, with responsibilities varying from simple to complex tasks.
Key Accountabilities
- Accurately book journal entries into the accounting system, ensuring compliance with accounting standards and company policies
- Maintain organized records of journal entries, reconciliations, analyses and supporting documentation for audit and compliance purposes
- Prepare and analyze reconciliations for various financial statement line items such as prepaid assets, fixed assets, and accruals, in a timely manner
- Participate in process improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and accuracy in accounting practices
- Utilize advanced Excel skills to analyze data and provide insights to support month-end close processes and financial reporting
- Maintain a thorough understanding of industry best practices, accounting principles, and regulatory requirements
- Actively contribute to the team's success and foster a positive and collaborative work environment
- Take on additional responsibilities and projects based on business needs
Requirements
- Post-secondary degree in Accounting, Finance or related field, college diploma or equivalent certification is preferred
- CPA or relevant professional certification is a plus
- Minimum 2-3 years of experience in accounting or finance roles, preferably with exposure to month-end close processes
- Strong understanding of accounting principles and financial reporting requirements
- Advanced skills in Microsoft Excel, data analysis, and pivot tables
- Experience with NetSuite or other ERP system is highly desirable
- Excellent attention to detail and strong organizational skills
- Ability to multi-task, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills for collaborating with cross-functional teams
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to think critically
- Willingness to learn, adapt, and take on new challenges
- Proactive and self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
