Cascadia Architects is a 20-person architecture studio based in Victoria, British Columbia. The practice is led by Principal Architects Peter Johannknecht and Gregory Damant. The firm’s identity is rooted in their combined 60 years of practice in Victoria, Vancouver and Germany. Cascadia’s areas of practice include commercial, institutional, mixed-use residential, interior design and custom residential. Our focus is on urban and in-fill projects. Attention to good urban design principles and sustainable construction systems such as LEED and PassiveHouse inform our methodology.
The Opportunity
Cascadia Architects is growing and looking for a Financial Controller to join our team 3 to 4 days per week. The ideal candidate is an experienced, skilled accountant - meticulously organized, self-directed, with a love of both order and variety. The Controller ensures the smooth operation of all financial activities at Cascadia Architects. Responsibilities include accounting, strategic financial analysis, and day-to-day bookkeeping. The Controller manages cash flow, budgets, forecasts, and oversees accounts payable and receivable. They will also work with senior management to develop financial strategies that align with the firm’s goals, ensuring financial integrity and efficiency across all projects.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and reports
- Accounts receivable and accounts payable including monthly reconciliation of all bank accounts
- Prepare monthly invoicing for all projects
- Prepare all tax filings and payments for corporate taxes and GST
- Develop and implement financial policies and forecasting processes
- Assist in the preparation and review of annual budgets and long-term financial forecasts for presentation and discussion with shareholders
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to support business decisions and strategic initiatives
- Ensure compliance with financial regulations and industry standards
- Collaborate with project architects to monitor project budgets and financial performance
- Implement and maintain accounting software and financial systems
- Oversee payroll and benefits administration, ensuring accuracy and compliance with laws and regulations
- Assist with the development and implementation of HR policies related to compensation, benefits, and financial compliance
- Prepare financial information for employee performance reviews and compensation planning
- Oversee the purchasing of office equipment, including computers, software and furniture
- Collaborate with IT and office administration to assess and plan for equipment and software needs
- Identify and manage financial risks including insurance, investment and project risks
- Develop and maintain internal control systems to safeguard assets and ensure accurate financial reporting
Qualifications
- Minimum 5 years experience in finance and accounting with at least 2 years experience as a controller or similar financial leadership role, preferably in an architecture or related industry
- Credentials in accounting, finance or related fields. CPA is considered a plus but is not a requirement
- Strong understanding of financial management, accounting principles, and regulatory requirements
- Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Proficiency in QuickBooks Online, and mastery of Microsoft Excel
- Familiarity with Monogram or other project management software is an asset
- Strong leadership and communication skills
- Ability to work collaboratively with team and senior management
- Experience in payroll processing in PayWorks or similar payroll software and benefits admin is a plus
- Knowledge of HR policies related to compensation and benefits
