Job Summary
The Controller will be responsible for the oversight of all financial operations, including accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, internal controls, and compliance. The incumbent will be an integral part of the management team, will provide valuable financial insights and relevant analysis for decision making, and will help guide the company’s long-term strategic decisions.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Financial Reporting & Analysis:
o Prepare, review, and present timely and accurate monthly and annual financial statements including supporting analysis.
o Analyze financial performance and provide recommendations for improving profitability, efficiency, and cost management.
2. Budgeting & Forecasting:
o Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Board of Directors, ensuring alignment with corporate strategy and operational objectives.
o Monitor budgetary performance throughout the year, identifying variances and taking corrective action as needed.
o Provide financial forecasts and scenario analysis to support strategic decision-making and production and inventory management.
3. Internal Controls & Compliance:
o Ensure compliance with all financial, tax, and regulatory requirements.
o Oversee and enforce company-wide internal controls to safeguard assets and maintain the integrity of financial data.
o Coordinate the external review engagement and manage relationships with the independent accounting firm, ensuring timely and accurate completion of the review engagement and corporate tax returns.
4. Cost Accounting & Inventory Management:
o Oversee cost accounting practices and maintain accurate product cost structures.
o Analyze production costs, labor expenses, and material costs to ensure effective cost management and pricing strategies.
o Manage inventory valuation and control processes, ensuring accurate reporting and efficient inventory turnover.
5. Cash Flow Management & Financing:
o Oversee cash flow management, including monitoring receivables, payables, and working capital needs.
o Develop strategies for optimizing cash flow and ensuring liquidity to support operational needs.
o Manage US dollar requirements to minimize foreign exchange exposure.
o Support the Board of Directors in managing relationships with lenders and financial institutions.
6. Team Leadership & Development:
o Supervise and mentor support staff, ensuring proper training, development, and performance.
o Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and collaboration within the accounting and administration team.
7. Financial Systems Management:
o Oversee the implementation, management, and enhancement of the company’s financial systems including accounting software (Spire) and EDI software.
o Ensure accurate integration between financial data and manufacturing systems to improve operational efficiency.
o Research and implement accounting and other software to enhance productivity, support customer service, and improve reporting.
8. Personnel Management:
o Oversee all personnel functions to ensure compliance with employment, payroll and tax laws and internal company policies.
o Create and update company employee policies as needed.
- Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. A CPA is preferred.
- Experience:
- Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in accounting and finance, with at least 3 years in a managerial or senior role.
- Experience in a manufacturing or production-based environment.
- Understanding of cost accounting, inventory management, and financial systems in a manufacturing setting.
- Skills & Competencies:
- Proven ability to analyze financial data, identify trends, and provide actionable recommendations.
- Expertise in financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and financial analysis.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP and financial and tax regulations.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial software; ability to recognize software needs and evaluate and implement solutions.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across departments.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and compliance.
