Who You'll Work With
The Payroll and Benefits Specialist reports directly to the Payroll and Benefits Manager. The role interfaces with multiple business leaders to troubleshoot escalated payroll issues and will communicate directly with employees to address their pay questions or concerns. The Senior Payroll Specialist will also interact with external stakeholders as required and manage CloudMD’s benefits provider to ensure a high level of satisfaction across the organization.
What You'll Be Doing
The Sr. Payroll and Benefits Specialist plays a key role in the team to assist in developing a comprehensive payroll and benefits strategy for a fast-growing organization. Reporting to the Payroll Manager, the role oversees the full-cycle payroll for multiple entities and supervises the daily payroll activities. The Sr. Payroll and Benefits Specialist will also have a significant role in maintaining the company-wide payroll and benefits systems. This is a great opportunity for a payroll professional looking to bring their wealth of experience to refining processes for streamlining.
Specifically the Senior Payroll Specialist will work on the following:
- Payroll Processing and Management: Process payroll for hourly, salaried employees, and occasionally contractors; manage errors, resolve issues, and ensure timely and accurate payroll. Handle onboarding, updates (raises/bonuses), terminations, and commissions.
- System and Process Improvement: Identify areas for improvement in payroll processes, lead the implementation of new systems, and manage payroll system configurations. Streamline processes to enhance operational efficiency and ensure compliance with internal controls and procedures.
- Reporting and Reconciliation: Prepare and process payroll, commissions, and reconciliations for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end. Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and handle payroll-related government remittances.
- Legislation and Compliance: Monitor federal and provincial legislation impacting payroll, ensure compliance, and advise management on necessary actions. Stay updated on payroll requirements by agencies (CRA, WSIB, etc.) and support Finance with public company reporting.
- Benefits Management: Maintain and improve the benefits portal, review and reconcile benefit premiums, and recommend enhancements to benefits programs.
- Audit and Project Management: Lead and prepare for internal and external audits, and participate in projects focused on payroll and benefits automation, enhancements, and new program rollouts.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with stakeholders to ensure best practices in payroll and benefits services, and support budgeting, forecasting, and change management initiatives related to payroll and benefits centralization.
What You Need to Be Successful
- Minimum of PCP designation is required
- 5 years of experience processing Canadian and US payroll
- Strong knowledge of federal and provincial/state regulations, Employee Standard Act;
- Working knowledge of multiple payroll systems and experience with process improvement and implementing HRMS/payroll system
- Familiarity with equity payroll transactions such as stock options

- A high degree of professionalism and discretion in handling sensitive and confidential materials
- Experience processing US payroll is an asset
- PCP designation is an asset
