Melo LLP is currently seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Staff Accountant to join our dynamic tax accounting team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in preparing accounting engagements from start to finish, with experience in U.S. and cross-border tax matters, as well as some exposure to Canadian tax returns. This role is ideal for a detail-oriented professional who can manage complex accounting tasks and ensure the accuracy and completeness of financial documents and tax filings. ****This is a full-time, in-person role.****
Responsibilities:
· Prepare U.S. tax returns, including federal, state, and local tax filings.
· Handle cross-border tax matters, ensuring compliance with both U.S. and Canadian tax regulations.
· Assist with the preparation and review of Canadian tax returns, including T1, T2, and other relevant filings.
· Research and stay up-to-date with changes in tax laws and regulations affecting cross-border transactions.
· Serve as a point of contact for clients, addressing their accounting and tax-related queries.
· Provide expert advice on tax planning strategies for clients with cross-border transactions.
· Build and maintain strong client relationships through regular communication and consultation.
· Assist in the preparation of documents and schedules required for enquiries from CRA regarding tax filings.
· Lead the preparation and review of accounting engagements, including financial statements, tax returns, and other compliance documents.
· Ensure that all engagements are completed accurately and within set deadlines.
· Prepare financial statements and reports in accordance with applicable accounting standards (GAAP, IFRS).
· Ensure accuracy and integrity of financial data for reporting and analysis.
Qualifications:
· Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field. CPA designation (or equivalent) is required.
· Minimum of 3+ years of experience in accounting, with a focus on U.S. tax, cross-border transactions, and some Canadian tax experience.
· Proficiency in accounting software, tax preparation software and advanced Excel skills.
· Strong understanding of Canadian GAAP, and relevant tax laws.
· Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex tax concepts to clients and team members.
· High level of accuracy and attention to detail in all aspects of work.
· Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and provide solutions.
· Experience working in a public accounting firm.
