Overview of the Role:
We are seeking an experienced, hands-on Controller to oversee the financial operations of our multi-site retail organization. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, a deep understanding of financial management and reporting, and the ability to effectively manage cash. This role requires a detail-oriented individual with a passion for finance and a commitment to accuracy and integrity. This is a key leadership role which leads and develops the accounting team, supervises month-end close procedures, owns the monthly financial statement preparation, reviews tax filings and ensures effective cash management. The Controller will contribute to strategic decision-making to support the company's growth and profitability.
What You’ll Be Doing:
Financial Management and Reporting:
- Oversee all aspects of financial management, including financial reporting for multiple sites.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements and reports.
- Manage daily accounting operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, and general ledger activities.
- Suggest ways to improve processes, efficiencies, and spending.
- Ensure compliance with accounting standards and regulatory requirements (e.g., GAAP, ASPE).
- Lead and participate in month-end and year-end closing processes
- Ensure the integrity and accuracy of financial data.
Strategic Financial Planning & Analysis:
- Conduct financial analysis and provide insights to support decision-making and strategic planning.
- Identify financial risks and opportunities, recommending actions to mitigate risks.
- Manage cash flow, including owning a live Cash Flow Forecast for weekly distribution to owners and lender.
- Assist the FP&A function with budgeting and forecasting as needed.
Leadership and Team Development:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing accounting team
- Foster a collaborative and inclusive team culture that promotes continuous learning and development.
- Set clear performance expectations and provide regular feedback and coaching to team members.
Compliance & Internal Controls:
- Ensure compliance with all financial regulations and standards.
- Implement and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Coordinate with external auditors and manage audit processes.
- Support Operations with the year-end inventory count, leading the count from a Finance perspective.
- Develop and maintain robust internal controls to safeguard company assets.
- Review monthly tax filings and coordinate with CRA and tax authorities on audits as they arise.
Risk Management:
- Identify and mitigate financial risks to the organization.
- Ensure compliance with all relevant financial regulations and standards.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax authorities and regulatory bodies as necessary.
What You Bring:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting
- CPA Designation
- Minimum of 10 years of progressive finance and accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a financial leadership role.
- In-depth knowledge of financial regulations and compliance standards.
- Experience with multi-site financial management.
- Proficiency in financial software and ERP systems; specifically experience with D365 is an asset.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines.
- Excellent analytical skills with the ability to interpret complex financial data and communicate insights effectively.
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to accuracy and integrity of financial reporting.
- Solutions-focused and proactive, with a strategic thinking ability.
- Adaptable, forward-thinking, and self-motivated.
- Ability to respond to challenging situations with a positive and professional approach, offering solutions and innovative ideas.
