Role Description
This is a full-time Financial Controller role located in Toronto, ON. with flexibility for some remote work. As a Financial Controller at TheAppLabb, you will be responsible for overseeing financial activities, preparing and analyzing financial statements, managing financial reporting, and ensuring compliance with accounting principles and regulations. You will also be involved in financial planning and analysis, budgeting, and providing financial insights and recommendations to support business decision-making.
As a Financial Controller at TheAppLabb, you will be responsible for overseeing the financial health of the organization and ensuring its financial integrity, transparency, and stability. This role involves in-depth cost analysis, budgeting, financial forecasting, and the management of financial reporting systems. You will work closely with the management team to provide strategic financial insights and guidance that supports informed decision-making.
Role Responsibilities
Day-to-Day Tasks:
- Oversee all aspects of the financial planning and analysis function, including budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis.
- Manage the monthly/quarterly/annual closing process, ensuring timely and accurate financial reporting, complying with legal, regulatory and company policies, including Cash on Hand, AP, revenues and liabilities.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with our outsourced accounting team, providing guidance and ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements
- Manage payroll preparation ensuring timely and accurate processing.
- Liaise with various departments (e.g., sales, HR) to determine and validate commission and bonus payouts, ensuring adherence to established company policies.
- Ensure Targets adhered to re: Budgets across Departments and overall
- Adjust operational budgets and expenses to promote profitability.
- Analyze financial data to identify trends, opportunities, and risks, translating insights into actionable recommendations for business improvement.
- Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and develop custom financial reports to track and measure profitability metrics specific to the custom digital product development business model.
- Prepare financial presentations and reports for senior management, effectively communicating financial performance and strategic direction.
- Oversee the preparation of periodical financial reports, including monthly, quarterly, and annual accounts, and ensure they comply with legal, regulatory, and company policies.
- Monitor financial performance, analyze variances, and conduct profitability analysis to support strategic decision-making by the Senior Leadership team.
- Implement automated P&L and Financial Forecast for 3 and 6 months.
- Create and execute plan to reduce fixed costs as required.
- Manage cash flow and ensure financial stability.
- Handle and process accounts receivable and payable functions, including issuing customer invoices and following up on collections; managing vendor invoices (both domestic and international) through approval workflow and processing payments; Managing expense reports and reimbursements.
- Create a plan for all payable liabilities
- Manage vendor relationships and negotiate contracts to ensure cost-effective services.
- Prepare and manage annual budgets, financial forecasts, and financial models.
- Development of new and improvement of existing Financial Dashboards
- Develop and maintain the cost accounting system, documents, and records of the organization.
- Analyze and report on cost variances, margins, and company expenses to identify opportunities for financial optimization.
- Conduct internal audits and coordinate with external auditors to ensure accurate financial reporting and compliance with all tax laws and regulations.
- Coordinate Management of Banking Activities
- Evaluate overall performance by gathering, analyzing and interpreting data and metrics including: Annual/Quarterly OKRs, KPIs, Financial metrics, Key levers
- Ensure business meets or surpasses Operating Profit Margin Goal by: Monitoring burn – actual vs budgeted for each project and ensuring project profitability
Required Qualifications
Formal Education or Equivalent
- Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting or related field; CMA or CPA preferred.
Years of Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in a senior accounting role with a proven track record of managing financial processes in a service organization.

Specialized skills, knowledge or certifications unique to this role
- Financial Reporting & Analysis: Strong understanding of GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and financial reporting frameworks. Expertise in developing and interpreting financial statements, variance analysis, and key financial metrics.
- Strategic Planning & Budgeting: Experience in creating and implementing financial models, budgets, and forecasts. Ability to translate financial data into actionable insights to guide strategic decision-making.
- Internal Controls & Risk Management: Solid understanding of internal control frameworks and risk management principles.
- Payroll Management: Payroll certification (e.g., CPP) or proven working knowledge on running payroll successfully for an organization with 200 to 300 employees spread in different geographies, including navigating various tax regulations.
- Accounts Payable & Receivable Management: Experience in processing and managing accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, vendor relations, and collections.
- Communication & Collaboration: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively collaborate with cross-functional teams (executive leadership, sales, operations) and translate complex financial information into clear and concise language for both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Technical Proficiency: Proficient in accounting software (e.g., QuickBooks, NetSuite) and financial modeling tools (e.g., Excel).
