Finance Director
Position Summary:
Reporting to the Administrator, the Finance Director will not only be an exceptional accountant and hands-on with the company’s finance, but will also be commercially aware, advising on the best path of growth for the business.
The Finance Director will oversee and be responsible for all financial aspects of company strategy and is expected to analyze figures and implement recommendations based on these findings, with the most profitable outcomes.
Often managing and leading the finance team through difficult periods including month end, year-end and annual budgeting. The Finance Director will have excellent communication skills with all levels of staff, often having to work with various departments to help them plan and manage their own budgets.
The Finance Director is responsible for budgeting, forecasting, account reconciliation and profit and loss reporting, as well as oversee all accounting activities related to income auditing, accounts payable processing, accounts receivables collection, tax and regulatory compliance, payroll and has a strong background in corporate finance management.
In periods of change and growth, an effective Finance Director is critical, coordinating corporate finance and managing company policies and bylaws regarding capital requirements, debt, taxation, equity and acquisitions as appropriate.
Finance Director duties and responsibilities:
- Oversee, review, and adhere to the budgets for each business department
- Assist in company-wide budgetary planning
- Ensure that all of the company's financial practices are in line in statutory regulations and legislation
- Analyse the financial climate and market trends to assist the Administrator in creating strategic plans for the future, alongside the Administrator and Settlement Council
- Interpret complex financial Information and provide updates and information as needed
- Monitor cash flow, accounts, and other financial transactions
- Oversee the financial assistants and other employees in the facilitation of day-to-day operations, including tracking financial data, invoicing, payroll, etc. grants
- Prepare official reports on a monthly and annual basis
- Seek out methods and practices to minimise financial risk
- Oversee all accounting work and set up internal and external audits to ensure accuracy of information.
- Assess company spending and work to reduce costs
- Manage finance department, training any new employees as necessary
- Have a clear understanding of and adhere to current laws and regulations
- Establish internal work processes for financial department (including accounting and billing) and monitor their progress
- Oversee all financial, project/program and grants accounting and reporting
- Update and implement all necessary business policies and accounting practices; improve the finance department’s overall procedures.
- To carry out any other tasks that will, from time to time, be allocated by the Administrator
- Create and maintain relationships with service providers and contractors, including banking institutions and accountants
- Create/update and implement financial policies and procedures and bylaws
- Maintain a policy manual for the finance department
- Establish and implement a training program for finance employees
- Present Year-end Audited Statements to public, along with accountant
Finance Director Skills and Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in accounting, business, finance, or a related field; several years of experience in finance; excellent mathematical skills; leadership skills; management experience; integrity; honesty; understanding of data privacy standards; exceptional communication skills, both written and verbal; thorough understanding of business principles and practices; superior attention to detail; organizational skills; planning skills; problem-solving skills; research skills; analytical skills; critical thinking skills; computer skills; multi-tasking skills; A track record in grants management. In-depth knowledge of corporate finance and accounting principles, federal and provincial laws and regulations related to finance and best practices; A hands-on management style and the ability to address and solve problems or issues as they arise.
Minimum Requirements:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Business Administration is required. At least seven years of experience in accounting and financial management at a senior professional level. Experience in government (federal and provincial) grants accounting and contracts management. Thorough understanding of general accounting principles and procedures, business and administrative practices, and non-profits. Staff management and trainer experience. Strong communication skills, both verbal and written. Excellent computer skills, particularly with QuickBooks Pro and all software in Microsoft Office 2000, including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook. Demonstrated ability to work with customer/client groups and/or experience in membership organizations. .. Ability to work as a team member and work effectively with diverse people. Demonstrated awareness of and value of cultural competence. Must be self-motivated, display sound judgment, relate well to the public and staff. Grant/Business/Proposal writing skills a plus. Valid Class 5 Drivers License and insured vehicle.
Term: This is an annual contract position with a 3 month probationary period.
